Stained Glass Picture

Stained Glass Picture started in 2015 and finished in 2017.

The first requirement for making any stained glass is a design. In this case the design was to be for a stained glass picture to go above a set of double doors that opened out on to a patio.

The area for installation was measured and a frame to carry the glass was made. Then the design layout was completed.

This image shows frame and glass design: –Stained Glass Frame

The design layout is made using a fine felt tipped pen drawing a line which is about 1.5mm in width. The centre of the leading which is an ‘H’ shaped section of lead is about 1.5mm in thickness, so the design pattern is near to or true to, finished cut glass size.

When cutting the glass the allowance for the drawn line (i.e. thickness of the centre of the lead) means that the glass should be cut accurately just inside it.

A joiner made the frame from my drawings showing what was needed: –

Starting the cutting of the glass to fit the design: –

This picture shows that each piece of the picture has to be individually cut and ground to the exact shape of the design beneath.

Here is much more of the right hand side panel cut. At this stage the picture consists of the sea and breaking waves, moon, clouds, rainstorm, stars and dark sky above.

Then the whole panel has been cut and can be seen in the next image: –

Now there’s a hilly shore line in the foreground, the cloud and dark sky are finished; there are branches and leaves intruding from the left hand side panel, along with some yellow sun beams.

The left hand panel will be the subject of the next post. Also information on how to actually cut glass.
